What Causes the Different Types of Sleep Apnea?

Snoring will not wake the snorer up but it usually disturbs the one who sleeps beside the snorer and wake up from sleep. Snoring during sleep at night is frequent occurrence and getting common. People who snores usually does not suffer from any medical condition.

The snorers usually can reduce their risk from getting serious disease when snoring and most of the snoring are non life threatening. However, very serious snoring can leads to more serious sleeping disorders. The good thing is the sleeping disorders can be cured and diagnosed.

Nowadays, sleep apnea, snoring and other sleeping disorders can be cured using different treatments.

Sleep

Sleep is an active, organized process essential for life. It supplies the physical and emotional renewal necessary for your survival. The body relaxes nerves and muscles during sleep. That revitalizes them to carry on the biological processes inside the body. The whole process resembles recharging a battery.

Our sleep pattern depends on our circadian rhythm, the body clock that keeps us on regular 24-hour cycles and determines the quantity and quality of our sleep. This rhythm requires us to sleep for certain period regularly. The amount of necessary sleep may be different in different individuals, but it needs to be free of any disruption.

Research shows that 8 hours of sleep a day is optimum for most people while some can sleep less because they condition their brain to achieve highly effective sleep.

Remarks:

Sleep is very critical to our life. We need at least 8 hours of undisrupted sleep each day. Insufficient of sleep might lead to different mental and physical disorders. Sleep disorders need diagnosis and quick medical attention before it is getting worst.

Sleep Apnea

Apnea means “without breath” and it is from Greek. In simple English, it means ‘cessation of breath’. When your are not able to breathe properly while sleeping and have to wake up to gasp for breath, you might having sleep apnea. This situation may occurs 20 to 60 times within each hour. To diagnose it, your breathing needs to be monitored while you are sleeping.

The cessation of breathing for more than 10 second and occurred more than a several times while you are sleeping is the indication of sleep apnea. It contains apnoeic episode from 10 to 90 seconds where you stop breathing.

You might have many episodes in each hour of your night. Most people don’t know there’s a problem, so they don’t seek for a treatment

Three types of Sleep Apnea:

1. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
2. Mixed Sleep Apnea
3. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Obstructive Sleep Apnea, is the common sleep apnea that most individuals suffer from. It usually occurs when your airway collapse and your throat muscles or fat tissue in the throat, uvula(the hanging tissue at the back of your throat), tonsils and tongue block your airway. You wake up from sleep due to your brain gets the signals that your breathing is blocked. cpap

The risk of getting stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular problem will be escalated as a result of the continual deprivation of oxygen during episode. It can cause narcolepsy (sudden lapse of consciousness) and excessive daytime sleepiness.

The blockage or obstructions that affects OSA could be caused by large tonsils (particularly in children) and adenoids, overweightness, weak muscles or irregular physical structure (larger tongue or uvula or narrow airways, etc).

The other reasons that contribute to obstructive sleep apnea could be constricted sleeping position, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergies and excessive stress.

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a not so common form. It usually occurs when the breathing muscles stop for momentarily while communication with the brain is disturbed. Other than the similar symptoms as obstructive sleep apnea, there are also symptoms such as numbness of body parts, changes in your voice, body weakness and difficulty in swallowing.

CSA have symptoms that similar to obstructive sleep apnea such as lack of attentiveness, heart diseases, high blood pressure, irritability and excessive daytime sleepiness. You will also suffer from an after-effect called “Ondine’s curse” which causes you continue having the difficulty to breath easily when you are asleep.
